How it’s worked out

In the first year, road tax depends on CO2. After that, every car pays the standard £200, plus £440 a year in years 2 to 6 if it cost over £40,000 (£50,000 for electric cars). From April 2028, electric cars also pay 3p a mile and plug-in hybrids 1.5p.

Worked example

Your road tax is £640 this year. From April 2028 you'd also pay about £240 a year in pay-per-mile tax.

electric car · first registered from 1 April 2017 · list price £52,000

Worked example, step by step
Standard yearly rate£200
Expensive car supplement (list price over £50,000, years 2 to 6)+ £440
Road tax this year£640
From 1 April 2028: 8,000 miles at 3p a mile+ £240
