How it’s worked out

Leaving: if you don't fill in a tax return, you tell HMRC on a P85. If you do, you tell them on the residence pages (SA109) of your return. Renting out a UK home, selling UK property, a student loan, Child Benefit, your State Pension and voluntary National Insurance each have their own form or call.

Arriving: a starter checklist for your new employer, a National Insurance number, and Self Assessment if you have income or gains from abroad. After 10 tax years away you can claim relief on foreign income and gains, and on pay for work days abroad, on your return.

We list each item with its official page, and the dated deadlines for 2026/27.

Questions people ask

Can I tell HMRC I'm leaving online?

With a P85, yes, once you've left. HMRC's free online tax return doesn't take the residence pages, so you send a paper return by 31 October, or file online through software (or through us) by 31 January.

Do I need a tax return when I come to the UK?

Not if you're an employee with no other income to report. You do if you have income or gains from abroad, or want to claim relief on them.

Does a P85 get my tax back?

It can. HMRC uses it to check the tax taken from your pay this year, and may refund some if you leave partway through.
