How it’s worked out
HMRC now looks at a double-cab pickup as a whole, and treats most as cars for company car tax and capital allowances from 6 April 2025. Ones bought, leased or ordered before then keep the old treatment until they're sold, the lease ends, or 5 April 2029. For VAT, a payload of 1 tonne or more still makes it a commercial vehicle.
Worked example
For company car tax and capital allowances it's a car, but for VAT it's still a van.
Double cab · payload 1 tonne or more
| Company car tax | Car |
|---|---|
| Capital allowances | Car |
| VAT | Van |
| Taxed as pay as a car (37% of the list price) | £14,060 |
| Taxed as pay as a van | £4,170 |
Based on HMRC's guidance on double-cab pickups from 6 April 2025 and the VAT payload test.
