How it’s worked out

VAT on buying a car is blocked unless it's used only for business and not available for personal use. On a leased car with any personal use, half the VAT on the payments is blocked. VAT on vans and other commercial vehicles is normally claimable in full.

Worked example

You can claim back £600 of the £1,200 VAT on the lease payments.

car · leased · available for personal use

Worked example, step by step
VAT on the vehicle£1,200
Blocked− £600
You can claim back£600

Based on HMRC's VAT rules for motoring expenses (Notice 700/64).
