How it’s worked out
Each person can give £3,000 a year free of inheritance tax, plus last year's if it wasn't used. Parents can each add £5,000 for a wedding, grandparents £2,500 and anyone else £1,000. Anything more is tax-free once the giver has lived 7 years after the gift.
Worked example
£22,000 of the £30,000 is free of inheritance tax straight away. The other £8,000 is tax-free if the giver lives another 7 years.
Two givers · parent to child · wedding gift · last year's allowance unused
| The gift, £15,000 from each of two people | £30,000 |
|---|---|
| Wedding gift: £5,000 from each giver | − £10,000 |
| Yearly allowance: £3,000 from each giver, plus last year's unused | − £12,000 |
| Tax-free only if the giver lives 7 more years | £8,000 |

Questions people ask
Do I pay tax on money I'm given?
No. There's no tax for the person receiving a gift. If it earns interest or grows, that may be taxed as normal.
What if the giver dies within 7 years?
The gift counts towards their estate first. Tax is only due if gifts in the 7 years add up to more than £325,000, and less is due the longer they lived.
